Moisture Sensitive Device (MSD) Control

🔧 What Is MSD and Why It Matters

Moisture Sensitive Devices (MSDs) are electronic components that absorb moisture from the environment. If improperly stored, this moisture can expand during reflow soldering, leading to internal delamination, cracking, or popcorning. Correct MSL handling prevents these failures and protects product integrity.


📦 Level 2 Devices – Long-Term Vacuum Storage

Components rated MSL Level 2 must be stored in vacuum-sealed packaging with desiccants. This ensures a floor life of up to one year, eliminating moisture exposure. Baking is not needed if the packaging remains intact. Ideal for stable storage and predictable production schedules.


💧 Levels 2A to 5A – Strict 24-Hour Floor Life

For components with MSL Level 2A to 5A, dry cabinet storage is essential. Once removed, they must be assembled within 24 hours. If exposed longer, they require baking at 125°C for 24 hours to remove absorbed moisture. Accurate tracking of exposure time is mandatory.


⚠️ Level 6 Devices – No Room for Delay

Level 6 components are highly sensitive to humidity and must be assembled immediately upon unpacking. No floor life is granted. Mandatory baking is required before use, regardless of storage history. These parts demand tightly controlled production scheduling.
